TANYA LEE CERAMICS

ARTIST STATEMENT
My work explores the relationship between archetype, transformation, and the healing potential of creative practice. Drawing inspiration from Jungian dream and shadow work, Tarot symbolism, and the enduring comfort of circles as containers for reflection and connection, I create figurative sculptures, masks, paintings, and functional objects that invite curiosity, play, and self-discovery.

Humor, beauty, and storytelling are central to my practice. Through recurring characters, expressive faces, and atmospheric surfaces, I seek to give form to the often unseen aspects of the psyche—the dreams, memories, and archetypal narratives that shape our inner lives. The soft roundedness of circles and vessels appears throughout my work as a symbol of belonging, continuity, and the safe spaces where transformation can unfold.

My porcelain masks are created in collaboration with the unpredictable forces of soda and wood firing. I thoughtfully manipulate surfaces to welcome the movement of flame, ash, and vapor, allowing the kiln to become an active participant in the creative process. Much like the symbolic language of dreams and Tarot, atmospheric firing balances intention with mystery, revealing unexpected layers of character and meaning.

Ultimately, I see art as a compassionate practice of inquiry—a way to meet ourselves with wonder, hold complexity with gentleness, and uncover beauty in both the known and the unknown.
